Newlyn and the West Cornwall area

Newlyn Harbour, with Sea View Cottage in the background. Sea View Cottage back yard and a cream tea in the dining room.

West Cornwall is well known for its amazing coastal landscapes, beautiful sandy beaches, sheltered coves, fishing villages and mining heritage. Add to this the art galleries, theatres, gardens and a reputation for good local food and its clear why the area is so popular. Newlyn is ideally situated to enjoy the many attractions of West Cornwall. Although less well known as a holiday destination than nearby St Ives, it has grown in popularity but maintained its character.

Newlyn is an important fishing harbour and the fishmongers on The Strand all have a wonderful choice. For eating out try The Tolcarne, Lewis's and Jelbert's ice cream shop.

Only a few minutes stroll from the house include; fishmongers, bakers, butcher, greengrocers, a specialist cheesemongers and a well-stocked Co-op. Also close by are the Newlyn Art Gallery and The Filmhouse. It is an easy walk to Penzance and Mousehole and there are regular busses from Newlyn. Nearby are St Ives, Marazion and St Michael's Mount.

Several NT gardens are all within a few miles and Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens is well worth a visit. Nearby Morrab Gardens in Penzance is a hidden gem, and its Mediterranean and sub-tropical planting make it unlike any other municipal garden in the UK.

There are over 40 beaches within 10 miles of Newlyn and everybody has their own favourite. Locals with dogs either walk to Newlyn Tolcarne Beach or drive a few miles to the sandy Longrock Beach, which has easy parking.

There are regular busses from Newlyn to local villages and to Penzance bus and train stations for services further afield. The busses allow sections of the South West Footpath to be walked without relying on a car.

If all you want is to sit back, relax and enjoy the view, the house is ideally situated. It overlooks Newlyn Harbour and has uninterrupted views along the Penzance Promenade past the Jubilee Pool to Marazion and St Michael’s Mount and across Mounts Bay to the Lizard Peninsular.
